    Spotfire Installation best practices

We are re-doing all our Spotfire installations on new more powerful servers and we want to be sure we get these installations done in the best possible way, following standards and best practices where applicable.

Does anyone got any ideas, tips, best practices, favourite tweaks to suggest we implement? I don't mind if the tip is small or you think it's insignificant. So that I don't ask for something without giving something first, here are the generic items that are on my list so far:

    - Single server for Webplayer and Spotfire server.
    - DNS aliases for friendly environment name
    - Default port numbers for all services.
    - HTTPS configured on all services.
    - Different IIS application pool for Webplayer.
    - Increased timeout and DB connection settings.
    - 64bits install.
    - Extended memory heap size for Tomcat for the Spotfire Server.
    - Standard installation directory.
    - Better configuration on the Spotfire logs Log4j recycling settings.
    - Separate accounts for each Spotfire component.
    - Windows Network Shares for Spotfire Logs and Library (to be able to download exports).
    - Scheduled Updates configured.
    - Automation Services configured (and restricted to special accounts only).
    - SMTP access for the Server to allow Automation Services to send emails.
    - Jconsole configured on Tomcat to able to monitor Java Heap usage on Spotfire Server (also permissioned so that login is required).

    Thanks!

    Hi Turribeach,

Thanks for sharing your installation framework...

One of the things we follow as best practice is changing the WebPlayer OOTB (versions below 4.5) logging behaviour with the following instructions:

    http://stn.spotfire.com/stn/Tasks/LoggingAndMonitoringTheWebPlayer.aspx

The other checks we have on our list are performance related and we got them from this post:

http://stn.spotfire.com/stn/Blog.aspx?Blog=spotfire.tibco.com/community/blogs/stn/archive/2009/10/26/Performance-tips-for-large-datasets.aspx&uswords=%22performance%22 *For TSS, always use native JDBC connectors to dBs, i.e., the ones provided by the dB maker.

*When using SQL Server and using the MS’s JDBC connector, add responseBuffering=adaptive to the JDBC connection string

*White-list the Antivirus for everything under TSS and under WebPlayer’s installation directories

    Hope this helps...

    JC

Many thanks JC. I had the monitoring in mind as well but the STN link is handy. The performance tips are good. Are you on Twitter at all? Trying to get some Spotfire people on my Twitter feed but not finding much!
